Security forces on Monday began search operations in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara and Bandipora districts, police said.

A police officer said the militants were killed after they fired upon a joint party of police and army near Galganzer, Zacheldara in Rajwar area of Handwara on Monday evening.

Police officials are trying to ascertain their identity and affiliation, The Hindu reported. "The attack was repulsed and both the militants were killed", said the police. A search was launched in the area after the encounter, the spokesman said.

The BSF man was on leave at his home and killed in gun and knife attack of militants on September 28.

Meanwhile, a policeman is reported to have sustained injuries in the encounter and has been shifted to a hospital where his condition is stable. In a separate case in south Kashmir's Shopian district, militants assaulted a Congress worker.

The militants kick Gulzar, who is half naked, and force him to take a "pledge" that he would not work with the mainstream parties in future.
