That's according to market research firm Canalys, which is out with its analysis of shipments during the three month period ending in September.

He looked at the time passed on his Apple Watch, and suddenly remembered that the thing can make voice calls on its own, so he called his family to let them know he will be late.

The new device, Apple's first that connects to the internet without being tethered to a smartphone, took the US mobile giant to 3.9 million shipments in the recent Q3 2017, according to new data from Canalys. "Otherwise, the market will see further consolidation, as vendors such as Apple, Samsung and Fitbit dominate with their watch software platforms", says Jason Low, analyst, Canalys. The numbers for Q3 2017 suggest that Apple shipped 3.9 million units of the Apple Watch, which is the company's strongest quarter ever for the Watch. Service providers had underestimated demand for the new Apple Watch. On the health and fitness front, Apple included smart activity coaching, a redesigned workout app, new features for swimmers and a gym kit. The firm estimates that the gen-three version accounted for just 800,000 shipments, due to supply issues, which bodes well for Apple coming into the lucrative holiday season. "In China, customers with high expectations are being driven away by the service disruption fiasco in the country". Besides bringing in more stock, operators should work on improving their remote service provisioning systems to cater for the expected higher demand in Q4.

Apple has once again surged to the top of the global wearables market, forcing Xiaomi into second place. Xiaomi and Fitbit trailed Apple with 3.6 and 3.5 million units, mostly consisting of fitness bands. But despite the increase in smartwatch shipments, waning demand for basic bands meant the overall wearable band market fell 2% to reach 17.3 million units, according to Canalys. Smartwatches are vital for improving the overall brand image for smartphone vendors looking to enter the premium segment. They are also boasting slimmer designs they hope will resonate with consumers during the holiday shopping season. But Canalys reported the top vendors were all up in the previous quarter.
