Chennai techie dies after spurned stalker sets her on fire, family critical

Chennai A 22-year old woman died after she was set on fire allegedly by a stalker for refusing his proposal. The victim's mother and sister have also been injured in the incident, as they tried to save the victim and have been hospitalized with severe burns.

The incident occurred in Adambakkam area in Chennai on Monday night. Her mother Renuka and younger sister Nivedhika suffered 50% and 20% burn injuries, respectively.

The deceased woman was identified as Induja and her mother and sister are undergoing treatment at hospital. When her parents started looking for an alliance, Akash who came to know about it got furious and threatened her with dire consequences.

Indhuja's mother and sister, who had also been doused in petrol, caught fire as well.


When Indhuja didn't respond, Aakash went to her house on Monday night and committed the heinous act. She was rushed to Kipauk Medical College Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. As the argument turned soar, Akash brought a can of petrol he had kept in his two-wheeler and poured it on her and set her on fire, the police said. Indhuja and her family were initially reluctant to open the door, but Aakash persisted, claiming he only wanted to speak to Indhuja for a few minutes.

The accused Akash (25) who tried to escape was arrested by the police on Tuesday morning.

The victim, an engineering graduate, was reportedly working in a company for the last few months.
