Still, Moon's planned visit to China coincides with an improvement in relations after the nations agreed to put aside a dispute over the deployment of a US missile shield on South Korean soil.

Seoul-Beijing relations have been at their lowest ebb due to China's protest against the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (Thaad) missile defense system in South Korea.

After months of Chinese protest and discussions, the countries' foreign ministries issued a joint statement on October 31, saying the countries will put their relationship back on the right track.

For his part, Moon said that bilateral ties are now standing at a new starting point.

Li made the remarks during a meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in on the sideline of a series of leaders' meetings on East Asian cooperation in the Philippine capital of Manila. He also hopes to travel to China for a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping next year. Li also expressed hope that both countries will normalize relations as early as possible.

China on Saturday vowed to strengthen coordination with its neighbours in dealing with the North Korean issue, as US President Donald Trump complimented Beijing on helping to rein in Pyongyang.

He also proposed resuming high-level economic dialogue to discuss detailed measures to fix the countries' ties, as well as their trade and economic relations.

Meanwhile, the two agreed for Moon to visit Xi in China in December to hold another round of summit talks, while Moon invited Xi to South Korea during the Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games, which falls in February next year, the spokesman said.

The Chinese prime minister said the countries' relations will continue to improve, though it may take time.

China and South Korea have agreed to restore bilateral relations to a "normal development path swiftly", the foreign ministry in Seoul said in a statement in October.

The annual forum involves the leaders of all 10 ASEAN countries, as well as those of South Korea, China and Japan.
