Creative Assembly will be taking their fans back to medieval Britain in their newly announced game, Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia.

The year is 878 AD, the embattled English king Alfred the Great has mounted a heroic defence at the battle of Edington, and blunted the Viking invasion. Though the Norse warlords have established themselves, the kings of England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales "have aspirations of their own", SEGA says. "This will complement our broader-scope titles perfectly". "They'll follow-on from previous Total War games and inhabit the same time-period, or at the very least relate to it".

According to the press release, this will be the most detailed Total War campaign map ever made. Among the ten playable factions fighting for dominance will be Gaelic warriors, Nordic vikings and the Anglo-Saxons, all thirsty to put an axe in their fellow mans fo'head. These are things we've already announced, though more key features will be announced soon! The goal for that new brand of Total War game is to focus on "exciting pivotal moments in history rather than whole historical eras", the developer said.

Will it be available on Mac/Linux?

As explained by series director, Mike Simpson, Creative Assemblies appears to be trying to do something new with this game and the Total War Saga series in general.

Thrones of Britannia is now only scheduled for PC release. Meanwhile, you can check out the announcement trailer below and wishlist the game on Steam.
