ALwar: Umar Khan, who was recently killed in an exchange of fire with alleged cow vigilantes at Alwar in Rajasthan, had a history of cow-smuggling and his accomplice Tahir, who was injured in the incident, was a habitual offender, the police said today.

"Gau rakshaks", or cow vigilantes, run a loosely organised movement that they say is meant to prevent cattle smuggling, with tactics that include highway ambushes. "We never eat cow meat as it's the only animal which gives our children the strength they need", said the old man who can hardly sit straight on a bamboo cot". Khan's dismembered body was found on the railway tracks in Govindgarh in Alwar district on Friday. These men who have been arrested are self-proclaimed gau rakshaks.

The Congress had on Monday said lynching of a dairy farmer Umar Khan, 35, by cow vigilantes in Rajasthan was "unfortunate" and asked why such crime occurs only ahead of elections. The first was lodged after the pick-up van with cattle was traced at Govindgarh while the second is a case of murder after Khan's relatives lodged an FIR. They planned to waylay it if it returned with cows. "When it did, they first threw nails in its path, but the pick-up truck moved on for a few metres", Rana said, adding that the two have claimed that "people in the pick-up truck first fired at them, and so they returned fire". "The pick-up truck they were using was stolen from Uttar Pradesh and its numberplate belonged to a motorcycle", said Rana, adding that Tahir and Javed would be apprehended soon.

The family of Umar had raised a hue and cry on Sunday at the Alwar hospital, where his body was kept.

Their other demands included dismissal of Ramgarh station house officer, suspension of Alwar district SP, a compensation of Rs 25 lakh, land and a government job to the next of kin.

According to Tahir, when he and Umar were on their way back home, they were attacked by 6 to 8 people. Umar died whereas Tahir, who had sustained injuries, was admitted in a private hospital in Haryana.
