A Rochester woman now admits to intentionally drowning her infant son.

Rochester police say officers responded Monday afternoon to a report of an unresponsive child at a home. The baby, Jeremiah, was immediately transported to Rochester General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The mother, Markiya Mitchell, was taken from the scene and, after being interviewed, admitted to drowning the baby in the bathtub on objective to kill him.

Police said Mitchell admitted to intentionally drowning Jeremiah during initial questioning.

"The defendant with intent to cause the infant's death left her infant son submerged in the bath water for a period of 1 to 2 hours", read the felony complaint.

Mitchell is expected to return to court Friday for a preliminary hearing as additional charges are considered for her case. She pleaded not guilty during her arraignment and was taken back to jail without bail. Nevertheless it is now thought that individual is the child's father who Mitchell had been fighting with.

Police say Mitchell has a 7-year-old child who is now being taken care of by a family member. Authorities also declined discussing Mitchell's mental state. She had just regained custody of the child from CPS.

Lewis also relayed police source saying that Mitchell had history of child abuse. Mitchell allegedly beat her 7-year-old child with a hammer. In addition to her late 10-day-old son, Mitchell is also the mother of a 7-year-old child, who was not home at the time of the incident and is now in the care of another family member. Neighbors say police came, but no arrests.
