Along with Nintendo's acclaimed Mario and Zelda games, open world adventure "Horizon Zero Dawn" accrued six nominations across all categories, as did one other title not elevated to Game of the Year status: social, sci-fi shooter "Destiny 2".

Breath of the Wild hold six nominations each, both vying for the same award in three of the categories.

We're nearing that time of the year when we need to start talking about awards and Game of the Year, and so The Game Awards have officially announced their nominees for 2017.

2017 was a pretty big year for video games, and on December 7, Geoff Keighley will attempt to distinguish the best of the best with the fourth installment of The Game Awards.

The full list of nominations can be found here, along with instructions on how to vote for your favourite. The five titles in the running for Game of the Year 2017 include Horizon Zero Dawn, Persona 5, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, Super Mario Odyssey, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

One of its nominations is to the Ongoing category, which acknowledges the long-term appeal of games with an online multiplayer focus, where regular updates keep players engaged.

A few awards will be decided by fan vote, and fans can cast their votes using Facebook, Google, and Twitter to help decide the winners of Best Esports Player, Best Esports Team, and Most Anticipated Game.
