Great American Smokeout: A day to quit smoking

Because it is the American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout.

Wyoming County Partners For Prevention has invited tobacco control specialists from Roswell Park Cancer Institute to provide cessation education to community partners at Valley Chapel Church between 10:30 - Noon.

Over 16,000 people die each year but 21 percent of MI adults and 12 percent of MI youth still smoke cigarettes. "Children are especially vulnerable because they breathe at a faster rate than adults". "Just as every successful goal starts with planning and preparation, so too does smoking".

The Great American Smokeout has been celebrated annually on the third Thursday in November since 1976. The urge to smoke is short - usually only 3 to 5 minutes. Before your quit day, write down healthy ways to cope. "We also want to reach out and help others who might want to quit, but haven't yet succeeded". Nicotine patches, gum, or other approved quit medication can help with cravings.

Wallace added that her team offers free health coaching for smoking cessation to any student who is ready to quit. Locally, you can participate in the Great American Smokeout by joining the Mississippi Tobacco-Free Coalition of Clay County and the Golden Triangle.
