"Today, I'm proud to know that little girls who wear a hijab and, just as powerfully, those who don't, can play with Barbie in a headscarf", Muhammad added. "Ibtihaj continues to inspire women and girls everywhere to break boundaries", Mattel wrote on its social media accounts, accompanied by a photo of Muhammad holding the doll.

As reported by People, Muhammad worked with Mattel every step of the way in the design process and said her resemblance to the doll was uncanny.

"There was so much about the doll that was important to me", she said. The Muslim Barbie doll will be available online in fall 2018.

Something that she made sure her doll featured was a realistic sense of her body type and her signature eye liner. "For all those people who didn't believe in me, this Barbie doll is for you". Girls were saying Barbie wasn't as cool as it used to be.

The news was announced at Glamour's Women of the Year summit. "By honoring her story, we hope this doll reminds them that they can be and do anything".

The prototype of the doll is the American fencing competitor Ibtihad Muhammad, who at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro won a bronze medal. The new dolls have been credited with helping revive sales.

The hijab - one of the most visible signs of Islamic culture - is becoming increasingly popular with Western businesses, from hijab-wearing models in top fashion magazines to Apple's recently launched "emoji" character in a hijab.

It's true that many women are forced to wear a hijab in certain countries, and I would never endorse such a mandate (I would also not endorse banning the hijab as that is the same limitation on human rights), but it's also true that many women do choose to wear the traditional religious garb. I'm really excited to have this moment happen in my life and also for all these little girls now who can shop for Barbie doll that may look them, may wear a hijab like they do, or like their mom does, or like a friend does.
