A most terribly awkward silence ensues, after which Affleck thoughtfully chews his gum in the manner of a man who knows he's probably just accidentally stoked the online outrage machine.

Users on social media shared screengrabs of their reactions and one wrote, "the jl cast's reactions to ben affleck dropping a joke about all the sexual assault allegations in hollywood is like a renaissance painting", and another added, "this is the moment when ben affleck made a rape joke... i mean here you can see who is trash and who is not".

The actor is already looking for ways to hang up Batman's cape, just months after he told the San Diego ComicCon audience that he wasn't going anywhere. Or maybe we'll have a Daniel Craig-James Bond situation on our hands, with Affleck inflating rumors that he'll exit after Justice League a whole bunch before he's officially announced to play Batman again. When Wonder Woman/Diana Prince wasn't being paired with Steve Trevor or Superman in the DC comic series, Batman/Bruce Wayne became her other romantic partner.

While giving an interview to a leading USA publication, Affleck noted, "The new Batman movie being developed by Matt Reeves ['War for the Planet of the Apes'] is something I'm contemplating". Batman is the coolest part, and I'm so thrilled to do it.

Flashpoint involves Barry Allen aka The Flash traveling back in time and saving his mother's life, creating a radical new reality where the Justice League never formed.

Directed by Zack Snyder, Justice League stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher, Amy Adams, Jesse Eisenberg, Amber Heard, Jeremy Irons, J.K. Simmons, Willem Dafoe, Connie Nielsen, Julian Lewis Jones and Ciarán Hinds. There would be a funeral for Bruce Wayne and the public would mourn their favorite bat's death.

If Affleck wants out and DC wants to carry on the Batman presence, the best option would be a transition from Batman to Nightwing. Batman and Wonder Woman also ended up as a couple in the animated series "Justice League Unlimited".

One thing seems clear, though; Affleck is done with Batman.

The film opens in South African cinemas on 17 November.
