From the USA standpoint, the presence of the three-carrier flotilla in Pacific waters is seen as a signal to North Korea that the United States will not be intimidated by Pyongyang's testing of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles.

More than 30,000 North Korean civilians have fled their homeland since the two nations came into being in 1948. It is located inside the 4-kilometer-wide (2 1/2-mile-wide) Demilitarized Zone, which forms the de facto border between the Koreas since the Korean War. Three enormous aircraft carriers, the USS Ronald Reagan, USS Theodore Roosevelt and USS Nimitz, are pictured alongside their strike forces and a range of fighter jets as the vessels patrol the seas off the North Korean coast.
