Gutt, who finished as the runner-up in The X Factor USA in 2013, was chosen after an online audition process was launched a year ago, just after Bennington rejoined the band for one last gig. Earlier this year, before Bennington's death, the surviving members of the band announced that they were seeking a new singer and holding open auditions.

It's nice to hear some new STP music.

Jeff Gutt, the former X-Factor contestant, has been tapped by STP to fill the shoes walked in by Weiland and Bennington.

Gutt was apparently one of the last people to audition for STP. "It was clear right away that Jeff had the range to sing vocally challenging songs like "Piece of Pie" and 'Interstate Love Song.' But we soon discovered that he also has a great ear for melody and knew how to write a song".

In what must come as even better news for Stone Temple Pilots fans, the band has chose to push beyond becoming a legacy road act, and has been actively working on a new album which they aim to put out in the Spring of 2018. "It took some time, but we found our guy", guitarist Dean DeLeo said. The band is also planning a North American tour. Last night's show included the debut of a new single "Meadow" which is now available to stream across all streaming service and will precede a new album due out in spring 2018.

According to this Billboard review, the crowd at the Troubadour was not that excited about Gutt.
