A White Lie is based on Karin Tanabe's 2016 novel The Gilded Years and will tell the nonfiction story of Anita Hemmings, the first African-American woman to graduate from Vassar College.

Zendaya is teaming up with Reese Witherspoon on a new movie called A White Lie.

The psychological thriller's script will be penned by Monica Beletsky. As a light-skinned woman, Hemmings was able to attend Vassar by passing as white. (Hemmings's ancestors included slaves; her father worked as a janitor.) It became something of a sensational news item when it emerged in August 1897, at which point Hemmings had already graduated.

Zendaya will also produce the film, alongside Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter.

For almost four years, Hemmings hid her true identity and was treated as an elite white woman at the school of her dreams until her roommate grew suspicious of her race, according to Vassar's alumnae publication.

Not only is she an bonafide moviestar starring in hit films like Spider-man: Homecoming and its untitled sequel, but she has sprinkled that Black Girl Magic (as a producer and actor) all over the runaway Disney hit KC Undercover. She'll also be following up Spider-Man: Homecoming with the franchise sequel, now slated for a 2019 release.

Zendaya will take on the role of Anita Hemmings.
