StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty is free starting from today

Starting today, players around the world get free access to the full Wings of Liberty campaign and the elite multiplayer competition of StarCraft II's ranked ladder, including all the latest units and balance updates through the latest release in the series, Legacy of the Void. It is the first episode in the SC2 trilogy.

However the other expansions and DLC will still be available for purchase in a bundle, should a player so wish to purchase it. Players who have purchased any of the three campaigns already should be pleased to find they will not go unrewarded, with it being announced that should a player already own Wings of the Liberty, they will be compensated with Hearts of the Swarm. It's zerg-focused and is the second episode.

Starcraft II is available for both Windows and Mac, but before you can get it, you'll need a Blizzard Battle.net account.

If you wil 10 First Wins of the Day in Unranked or Versus AI, you'll unlock ranked multiplayer. So yep, despite going free-to-play, Starcraft II won't feature any extra currencies or microtransactions.

If not, you can sign up for one after downloading the installer, which you do by clicking Play Free Now on the Starcraft II home page.

StarCraft 2's expansions, Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void will continue to be sold as an additional purchase, as will the Nova Covert Ops. Will you jump in now that the base game is free? We will also continue to offer premium upgrades like announcer packs, special skins, and new Co-op Commanders to enhance your StarCraft II experience in a number of different ways. Those who purchased any of the three before October 31 will receive an exclusive Ghost skin (above) and three new portraits as a free bonus.

But what makes today's announcement of SC2 F2P is how bad Blizzard burned EA after yesterday's Star Wars: Battlefront 2 kerfuffle about the cost in credits and gameplay hours to unlock heroes (since changed, by the way).

You can learn all of the details on the official site.
