Baker Mayfield apologizes, says he 'got caught up' in chippy game

But the game's story focused mostly on OU quarterback Baker Mayfield, who exchanged words with Kansas players at the coin toss, received a cheap shot from a Kansas defender in the first half, then spent much of the rest of the game trash talking with Kansas players and fans.

"It was a chippy game ... and it was chippy from the second that their guys decided they didn't want to shake our hands at the coin toss", Riley said.

"What I did was unacceptable", Mayfield told reporters after the game. "It's disrespectful. It's not the example I want to set". I think about the kids that are watching. That would mean Oklahoma losing twice - including to a one-win Kansas team that the Sooners have beaten 12 straight times by an average margin of more than 30 points.

ABOUT OKLAHOMA (9-1, 6-1 Big 12): Mayfield barely worked up a sweat against a TCU defense that leads the Big 12 in total defense (309 yards per game) and is ranked among the best in the nation, leading the Sooners on touchdown drives of 79, 80, 69, 75, and 80 yards as well as a field goal, all in the first half, while completing 15-of-21 passes for 299 yards.

While out of playoff consideration, the Sooners would still get the league championship game as the home team since they would have the first spot after a series of tiebreakers.

"I'm proud of our guys for getting to a point and not just - you're not going to take it anymore", Kansas coach David Beaty said.

Anderson became the third player in OU history to record 100 rushing yards and 100 receiving yards in the same game.

Mayfield was caught on camera making graphic gestures in the direction of the Kansas sideline during the game. He caught a pass in the middle of the field and outran the defense to the end zone to give the Sooners a 7-0 lead. Jordan Smallwood scored three plays later for a 14-3 lead. Mayfield was also the recipient of a very late hit in the first half. He's second on the team with 44 catches, 829 yards and eight touchdowns. That's likely no consolation for Kansas' humbled defense. "They did a great job of being physical". An (extremely unlikely upset) would make things more complicated, dropping the Frogs down into a group of four teams that will take three conference losses into Week 13.

Oklahoma could have run up the score but instead coasted, perhaps a result of the friendship between Riley and Beaty.

Earlier last week, Mayfield challenged the OU fans to show up and be loud. Oklahoma should maintain its place in the top four heading into December if it handles West Virginia next week.
