It's official: the Boston Bruins will take on the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2019 Winter Classic. Maybe both teams will wear special gold helmets as an ode to their hosts? This will be the third time Boston has played in the Classic, including hosting at Fenway Park in 2010 and a year ago at Gillette Stadium.

"The Blackhawks and Bruins, two of our most historic franchises, will be meeting outdoors for the first time at the 2019 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic", NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said. This is a league-most 4th appearance for the Chicago Blackhawks.

This is the first time that Notre Dame has hosted the Winter Classic, and just the second time that a college football stadium will serve as the venue.

"It's always very exciting and it's going to be no different again next year", longtime Boston center Patrice Bergeron told the Boston Globe's Kevin Paul Dupont.

Chicago's president and CEO, John McDonough, stated, "The Chicago Blackhawks are honored to be participating in this marquee event at an iconic venue like Notre Dame Stadium".

It will be the sixth outdoor game for the Blackhawks after hosting Pittsburgh at the 2014 Stadium Series at Soldier Field and playing at TCF Bank Stadium in Minnesota in 2016. "We appreciate the invitation to the game and look forward to what will be a great day for both franchises and the National Hockey League", he continued.

Since the event's inception in 2008, Chicago has appeared in three Winter Classics, while Boston has participated in a pair of their own.

The matchup should be a special homecoming for Bruins forward Anders Bjork, who play for Notre Dame for three seasons before moving on to the National Hockey League ranks.
