Delhi's Dyal Singh College (E) named as Vande Mataram Mahavidyalaya

The decision was taken after the college Governing Body met on Friday to decide a new name for the college which is due to be converted to a morning college.

Controversy erupted on Saturday after Delhi University's Dyal Singh College (Evening), which since the past few months has been functioning as a day college, made a decision to change its name to Vande Mataram Mahavidyalaya. According to an official statement, the name is expected to inspire the students.

Speaking to ANI, Amitabh Sinha, the chairperson of college's Governing Body said, "Notification was issued that Executive Council approved Dyal Singh evening college becoming a full-fledged day college".

Explaining why "Vande Mataram Mahavidyalaya" was chosen over "Madan Mohan Malviya College", Sinha told The Indian Express, "Woh (Malviya) kiske bachche the?"

He said that "No one should have objection to the name Vande Mataram as it is associated with our mother".


"The only agenda that was discussed was the name proposed for the new college, which was Vande Mataram".

He said, 'Notification was issued that Executive Council approved Dyal Singh evening college becoming a full-fledged day college , As Reported By TOI.

A section of teachers and students however are unhappy with the decision. There mustn't be controversy on it. People opposing it haven't understood it well. "If we develop a tendency of looking more backwards rather than in front accidents are ought to happen", said Sisodia.

The final decision on the name of the college was taken unanimously by the 16 members. But some started protesting saying that it is not acceptable? "Those who have a problem with paying obeisance to mother, there is a question mark on whether they are human beings or not", he said.
