The boys in blue are going green, with Ford's latest police vehicle promising a zero-emissions model that it claims could save plenty on fuel costs. Take away the bullbar, hide the lights inside the windshield for a more covert look and swap the black steelies for five-spoke alloy rims and you end up with this: The Special Service Plug-In Hybrid Sedan, which really rolls off the tongue.

Total range exceeds 500 miles, but we suspect this sort of vehicle sees only a fraction of that on a typical shift. The battery takes 2.5 hours to charge on a Level 2 charger. Of course, it's also compatible with standard 120 volt outlets, though the charging will be slower.

Ford's latest police auto is based on the Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid. Fitted with a 7.6-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery, this electrified cop vehicle can run for 21 miles on electrons alone. Despite that limitation, Ford says the plug-in hybrid police auto is ideal for "police and fire chiefs, detectives, and other government personnel whose jobs don't require a pursuit-rated vehicle". It downsized what would normally be a 3.7-liter V6 to a 2.0-liter four-cylinder instead, throwing in a li-ion battery and electric motor. It will also blast up to 85 miles per hour on that battery power before it needs the help of the 4-cylinder gas engine.

In contrast, this Special Service auto is designed for government agency workers who don't need a pursuit-rated vehicle. The Blue Oval thinks the setup would be ideal for officials like detectives or police and fire chiefs.

The Ford Special Service Plug-In Hybrid Sedan will be offered with a custom interior that includes heavy-duty cloth front seats, rear anti-stab plates, vinyl rear seating and flooring, and red and white task lighting in the overhead console.

Like any other auto, there are some options available here. However, a driver spot light, trunk storage vault, trunk ventilation system, and rear door control disabling are all options.

There are various emergency lighting packages, and a reinforced top tray for mounting equipment.
