The off-road vehicle, named the Roxor, will be built at the Mumbai-based automaker's new 150,000-square-foot manufacturing facility on Rex Boulevard.

Mahindra Automotive North America (MANA), set up in 2013, works as a comprehensive automotive design, engineering and vehicle development centre for the Indian OEM. Mahindra Group said it would begin producing off-road vehicles by early next year.

"This is an exciting day for Mahindra, our terrific employees and Detroit". Designed and engineered by Mahindra Automotive North America (MANA), the vehicle promises to be unlike anything now on the market, Mahindra said.

MANA, in the past 18 months, has tripled its workforce to 250, and by 2020 aims to create 400 more jobs, which will see additional projects and investment of another $600 million (Rs 3,790 crore) in local investments.

The partners are still studying what to collaborate on, but Mahindra said electric cars have been central to the conversation since he negotiated the alliance with executive chairman Bill Ford.

"This building opening represents our company's growing presence in North America and locally in the Metro Detroit area where we have tripled our workforce during the past 18 months", said Mahindra chairman Anand Mahindra in a statement released Monday. The magazine also reported that Ssangyong planned to launch an all-electric crossover vehicle in Korea in 2019.

Anand Mahindra said his company, one of the world's largest tractor manufacturers, had been testing self-driving models since it bought a minority stake in Japan's Mitsubishi Agriculture Machinery in 2015.

Iyer didn't seem to think the US pulling out of NAFTA would impact Mahindra's business in the USA, emphasizing that since the company mostly exports products to Mexico, rather than importing supplies or completed vehicles, they wouldn't be subject to any damaging duties. Designed and engineered by MANA, the vehicle promises to be unlike anything now on the market. And it recently signed a deal to work with Ford Motor Co. on electric and connected vehicle technology.

The partnership was an about-face for Ford after previous chief executive officer Mark Fields put the business in India under review past year.
