Barcelona invited to sign Mesut Ozil for £17.7m in January

Schalke would welcome the opportunity to bring Mesut Ozil back to Veltins-Arena sometime in the future, as per their head of supervisory board.

Manchester United will not only face competition from Barcelona for Mesut Ozil but from a German outfit as well, according to reports.

"I still have a great relationship with Mesut. I don't really know", Wenger said after the game. "We would definitely consider it. But it will certainly not happen next season".

Ozil could have signed for Barcelona in 2010 for just €8m but Xavi and Andres Iniesta were in their prime and Jose Mourinho stepped in to make sure it was Real Madrid who signed the German instead. But while he has been a joy to watch on the field, off it, things haven't exactly been hunky dory.

Mesut Ozil put on a Man of the Match display providing an assist for the opening goal and Alexis Sanchez netted his sides second.

It is claimed Arsenal have not ruled out selling Ozil in January.

Alternatively, Ozil is free to sign a pre-contract agreement with another club but remain at the Emirates until the end of his deal.

Arsenal fullback Nacho Monreal insists they deserved their win over Tottenham on Saturday.

However, the Bundesliga club is in Gelsenkirchen the city of Ozil's birth, and the World Cup victor did start his senior career with Schalke so it may not be inconceivable that he does return "home" to cement his legacy and help the club up the table to challenge Bayern's dominance.

Schalke's current stance on Ozil might be a reflection of their confidence in tying the aforementioned duo to new deals before the end of the season.
