Man Utd defender Smalling blasts Southgate for England snub

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has revealed a "selfish" desire for centre-back Chris Smalling not to regain his England spot and slammed the Three Lions medical staff for their treatment of Phil Jones.

"Was I surprised? Yes, I was", Smalling said at a pre-match press conference.

'We want to play in a certain way and the players I have brought in I want to see using the ball from the back and building it up in a certain way, ' said Southgate.

It is understandable then that Mourinho has been irked by the fact Jones was played by Southgate in a friendly match when he was already carrying a knock.

"I know that if England reach the final of the World Cup I know that a few weeks after we start the Premier League so I know if England goes to the World Cup final I have to start without my players but even so for England, a country I work and live, and probably will live for many years, I would like that to happen and the national team have all the conditions for that".

"I've been getting a good run of games over these last few months and I'm feeling good and that's the feeling you want, you want to be able to play regular games and be a part of a successful team".

'While I'm playing regularly here and part of a very successful team I think that should show come the summer.

'I don't really feel like I need to prove anything to Gareth.

The Red Devils manager said last week he had been "naive" to allow Jones to join up with England when he had a problem and speculated the likes of Manchester City's Fabian Delph and Chelsea's Danny Drinkwater would both be fit to play for their clubs despite having been unavailable for England selection, per Andy Dunn in the Mirror.

Jones will miss Wednesday's Champions League clash at Basel and the visit of Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League on Saturday, Mourinho said.

"With United there is always limelight on it and there's always going to be that pressure, no matter what the game is. You want to be able to play regular games and be a part of a successful team and, so far, we have been successful, it's just a case of improving on a year ago when we won two trophies and improving on that".

Phil Jones was included, but was forced to withdraw after limping off during England's draw with Germany, which left Mourinho furious.
