He'll undergo a microdiscectomy of the L3 and L4 spinal discs.

Head coach Cuonzo Martin is optimistic about the remainder of this season, even without the team's star freshman. "Our focus has been on Michael's well-being, just like every other player in our locker room". We're preparing now for a trip that is a tremendous opportunity. How much the injury and missing his entire freshman season would hurt his stock remains to be seen. "I'm thankful for the kind words and messages I've received from fans".

The 6-foot-10 Porter, the top prep prospect in the country last season, played in only two minutes of the season-opening win over Iowa State before missing the last three games with the injury. "I can not wait to be completely healthy and playing the game I love, once again". Martin and team spokesmen have not disclosed any specific diagnosis from the team's medical staff.

After Missouri made the announcement that he'd be out, Porter Jr. posted this on Instagram. He scored two points against Iowa State on November 10.

Porter, who was considered a potential lottery pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, is expected to need 3-4 months to recover, the university said, and likely would need to either prove to NBA teams that he's fully recovered before the draft or come back to play a full season at Missouri.

In Missouri's game against Wagner last week, Porter was not on the bench and instead watched the game from the locker room. Porter played in all three exhibition games against Kansas, Wisconsin and Missouri State.
