Rep. Gutierrez has represented Illinois's 4th Congressional District since 1993.

NBC 5 has learned congressman Luis Gutierrez will announce Tuesday he is not running for re-election after 24 years on Capitol Hill, sources say.

The decision seems to have been made recently as Gutierrez's spokesman, Douglas Rivlin told Politico he had not been informed of the news. The long serving IL lawmaker has also joined a number of his colleagues on the House Judiciary Committee in calling for Trump's impeachment.

The sources added that Cook County Commissioner Jesus "Chuy" Garcia, D-Chicago, likely will run to succeed Gutierrez in next year's election.

He is known as a fiery advocate of immigration reform that includes amnesty for illegal aliens, and has been arrested in demonstrations defending "Dreamers", illegal aliens who were brought into the country as minors.

ABC7 Political Reporter Craig Wall reported Monday night that 35th Ward Alderman Carlos Ramirez-Rosa is expected to circulate petitions for his seat.
