- Detroit police are questioning a person of interest after a 3-year-old boy died from a gunshot wound late Wednesday night.

In a video posted to the department's Facebook page, Assistant Chief Arnold Williams said the incident took place in the 11000 block of Rossiter around 7 p.m.

The 3-year-old was transported to a local hospital in critical condition and died as a result of the injuries, Williams said. "It looked like it happened inside", Williams said.

Officer Dan Donakowski said Thursday morning that the man later turned himself in. "There's no reason for any child to lose their lives". The shooting is under investigation. It's unclear if that person's death was suspicious or natural, but Williams said the child was able to get to the hospital quickly only because medical officials were already right across the street. Police say her story does not match up with evidence, though, which indicates the shooting happened inside the apartment.

Williams said police believe the shot was sacked inside the home.

Williams says the child's mother and a 1-year-old child also were at the apartment at the time of the shooting.

"We have the 1-year-old, but the boyfriend was not at the location when we arrived".

No weapon was found inside the home. Stay with FOX 2 for updates.
