Google cuts off YouTube video app in squabble with Amazon

YouTube is also cutting access Monday for a second time to Amazon's Echo Show video device.

"Amazon doesn't carry Google products like Chromecast and Google Home, doesn't make Prime Video available for Google Cast users, and last month stopped selling some of Nest's latest products", the company said in a statement to The Post.

Amazon and Google are in a tumultuous relationship and signs of discord have reached their peak as Google has stated that it won't allow Amazon streaming devices such as Fire TV and Fire TV Stick from accessing YouTube from January 1st 2018. Techcruch reported that despite efforts on the part of Amazon, the search firm believes its rights continue to be violated because of changes to the way the software operates. Google has also been planning to withdraw its the support for its video-sharing platform on Amazon's streaming devices.

"YouTube is all about maximising the number of people who see its content, and Amazon wants to be the so-called "everything store", he said, but in the end it is consumers who will bear the brunt of commercial tensions between the two companies.

"We hope we can reach an agreement to resolve these issues soon", says Google.

"Google is setting a disappointing precedent by selectively blocking customer access to an open website".

A statement from Amazon on Tuesday didn't address Google's claims.

It said it hoped to resolve the issue with Google as soon as possible but customers could access YouTube through the internet - not an app - on the devices in the meantime. YouTube returned to the Echo Show last month, before being pulled again on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, another long-standing streaming media tiff is getting (somewhat) resolved.

Amazon and Apple mended ties earlier this year when it was announced Prime Video would come to Apple TV. Amazon's decision of not selling the Google Chromecast and Apple TV (both of which have dedicated YouTube apps) has further strained the relation between Google and Amazon. As of time of writing, the product was not listed on Amazon.
