Oregon State hired former Nebraska HC Mike Riley to serve in a to-be-determined capacity.

Riley was sacked after finishing 4-8 this season with the Huskers.

Smith played under Riley for one season (1998) and spent another year on his staff as a graduate assistant (2003).

"Current and former players thriving in the National Football League and in life are proof of Coach Riley's tremendous ability to recruit outstanding young men", Smith said in a statement.

Mike Riley just can't stay away from Oregon State for long.

"Current and former players thriving in the National Football League and in life are proof of Coach Riley's tremendous ability to recruit outstanding young men", Smith said in a statement. I could coach quarterbacks, running backs, receivers, tight ends.

During his time at OSU, Riley coached current National Football League quarterbacks Derek Anderson (Carolina Panthers) and Matt Moore (Miami Dolphins), All-American wide receiver Brandin Cooks (New England Patriots) and former All-Pro running back Steven Jackson. Dan Van De Riet also returns to Corvallis in an administrative role.

According to the Oregonian, Trent Bray is expected to join Oregon State's staff, though his duties are unclear. He was sacked following the season and replaced by Scott Frost. The former Oregon State linebacker was not on the list of six hires announced Thursday by the university. Riley was due $6.63 million from December 1 through the remaining 39 months of his contract at Nebraska, a monthly cut of $170,000.
