No. 2 Kansas handed first defeat of season by Washington

The Cougars (6-2) used a 3-pointer from Carter Skaggs and a 3-point play by Robert Franks to get it to 14 on two occasions in the first three minutes of the second half but Sanders had a 3 and five points in a 7-0 run to push the lead to 21 with 15 minutes left and Washington State never challenged.

Junior Jayhawks guard Lagerald Vick poured in 28 points on 12-for-23 shooting, but was unable to one-man army Kansas past Washington.

Jaylen Nowell added 17 points for the Huskies (7-2), Noah Dickerson had a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds, along with five assists, while David Crisp finished with 10 points and seven assists in the win. On the other side of the court, the Jayhawks went 5-for-20 from deep.

Kansas led by five points early in the first half, but Washington managed to squeeze out a 36-34 halftime lead and then took over in the second half.

Graham, coming off back-to-back 35-point outbursts, was held to three points on 1-for-8 shooting, while Svi Mykhailiuk was 3 for 12 from the field and scored eight points before fouling out.

Washington will next face No. 12 Gonzaga on Sunday night at home. Turnovers: 13 (Vick 4, Mykhailiuk 3, Azubuike 2, Garrett 2, Graham, Newman). Cameron Krutwig had 14 points for the 9-1 Ramblers, who held the Gators to 37 percent shooting.

No. 11 North Carolina hit a season-high 16 3-pointers in clobbering Western Carolina 104-61. UNC shot 57 percent and made 16 of 22 3-point attempts for the game, coming one shy of matching the program record for made 3s in a game.

The Huskies were led by junior Matisse Thybulle, who finished with a team-high 19 points, while knocking down 5-of-8 from deep.

Trevon Blueitt hit the 20-point mark for the seventh time this season, scoring 26 in Xavier's 96-70 pounding of Kent State. Kerem Kanter added a season-high 20 points along with eight rebounds.

“I felt like this could be our best opportunity to win the game, ” Hopkins said. Danny Pippen led the defending Mid-American Conference champions with 15 points.
