The Patriots had to fill Rob Gronkowski's spot on the roster for this week and it appears they have filled it with a familiar face - linebacker Jonathan Freeny. This will mark Freeny's second stint with the Patriots.

Freeny, 28, spent the 2015 and 2016 seasons with New England before being released following training camp this past summer on the final cut-down on September 2, 2017.

Freeny originally entered the National Football League as a rookie free agent with Miami out of Rutgers in 2011.

The following year, Freeny made the Dolphins' active roster, where he played primarily on special teams.

The Patriots re-signed the linebacker, the team announced on Wednesday. He played in three games with Baltimore this season. His next stop was back in Florida with the Jacksonville Jaguars, but the Jaguars released him after just four days.
