The Ventura County Fire Department is calling it 96,000 acres.

Melissa Rosenzweig, 47, was briefly back home Wednesday after evacuating from her Ventura house, which has been spared so far while most on her street had burned in the largest and most destructive of the region's fires.

"This is good news for the fire crews as the winds will not be driven quite as vigorously", a weather service statement said.

Flames from the Thompson fire were within half a mile of the Santa Barbara County line by 1 a.m. Thursday and moving fast toward the north, and areas that had been issued an evacuation warning about four hours earlier were placed under mandatory evacuation orders. The blaze, which has destroyed at least 150 structures and threatened 12,000 others, and remained 5 percent contained, Cal Fire said.

People driving on Highway 101 on Tuesday night posted videos of the fire as it encroached upon the freeway.

While people in the area had to evacuate, state fire officials say the lack of vegetation softens the blow of the fire crossing the highway. An evacuation shelter was opened at UC Santa Barbara's Multi Activity Center, 516 Ocean Road. Santa Barbara Animal County Services are handling the evacuation of large animals and pets.

Santa Barbara City College also closed its campuses Thursday.

Gusty Winds laid down Wednesday, giving firefighters some time to gain ground on the fire. Firefighters rushed to attack the fires before winds picked up again.

Southern California has felt yellow wind, orange wind, and red wind. "We've never used purple before".
