Jerusalem Declaration: India's position on Palestine is independent: MEA

But New Delhi carefully avoided articulating its long-held position that Israel-Palestine conflict should be resolved through negotiation "resulting in sovereign, independent, viable and united State of Palestine, with East Jerusalem as its capital, living within secure and recognised borders, side by side at peace with Israel as endorsed in the Quartet Roadmap and relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions".

India, the first non-Arab country to recognise Palestinian statehood in 1988, has adopted a guarded position compared to much of the global community that has come out unequivocally against President Donald Trump's decision to shift the American embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.

The government's position came in for sharp criticism from the CPM.

"India supports all efforts to find an acceptable solution to all the pending issues including Jerusalem".

"An independent Palestinian State, with East Jerusalem as its capital, is the internationally accepted position. It is shaped by our views and interests and not determined by any third country", said Raveesh Kumar, spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs.

Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem has never been recognised internationally, and all countries maintain their embassies in Tel Aviv.

Alhaijaa's remarks came on a day the UN Security Council convened an emergency meeting on Friday on the USA government's move to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

"They are doing that", he said, "but the Israeli bureaucracy creates enormous obstacles to Arabs becoming citizens, even if they live in Jerusalem". "We are looking for a different body to look after the peace process".

The Palestininan President was also described then by PM Modi as "an old friend of India".

India enjoys close ties with both Israel and Palestine. All states of the Arab world are members of the OIC and in the last few years, India has been able to get support from some of these states on the issue of Kashmir and cross-border terror.
