Peru captain Paolo Guerrero will miss next year's World Cup finals after being handed a one-year ban for taking cocaine, Federation Internationale de Football Association said on Friday.

"We have learned from Federation Internationale de Football Association that there has been an extension of 20 days for an evaluation by the disciplinary commission", Oviedo told reporters on Tuesday.

"Stimulants", following a doping control test conducted after the match of the preliminary competition of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russiaâ„¢ played in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on 5 October 2017, read the FIFA website.

Peru qualified for the World Cup finals for the first time since 1982 by beating New Zealand in a two-legged playoff.

Guerrero's legal team presented its defence to the disciplinary committee in Zurich last week and the player later said that Federation Internationale de Football Association had ruled out drug use.

The ban, which takes effect on November 3, 2017, prevents Guerrero from playing in all domestic and worldwide matches and means the player will miss next year's World Cup in Russian Federation.

They were then drawn in Group C at the tournament in Russian Federation, alongside Australia, France and Denmark.
