It compared the combination with standard therapy - tamoxifen or an aromatase inhibitor plus goserelin and placebo - in women before or around the menopause with HR+/HER2- advanced breast cancer who had not previously received endocrine therapy for advanced disease. "There is a clear need to develop new therapeutic approaches for patients presenting with HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer that has become resistant to trastuzumab".

"The results of the PANACEA study are very encouraging", stated Dr Sherene Loi, PhD, associate professor at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne, Australia, who works with the International Breast Cancer Study Group (IBCSG). Women taking Kisqali also had a clinically meaningful improvement in pain symptoms as early as eight weeks and this improvement was sustained.

These drugs - which include Arimidex, Femara and Aromasin, among others - are often used to treat women with estrogen-sensitive breast tumors, Hershman said.

"Our goal was to provide an alternative to pain medications to control this side effect", said Dr. Hershman. Previous, smaller studies have shown that acupuncture can reduce joint pain and swelling related to aromatase inhibitor treatment, according to Dr. Hershman, but these studies provided uncertain interpretations due to their small size and the fact that they were conducted at single institutions.

The study was scheduled for presentation Thursday at the annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium, in Texas. After six weeks, patients in the true acupuncture treatment group reported significantly lower BPI "worst pain" by almost a point compared with those receiving sham acupuncture and no acupuncture.

Dr. Cynara Coomer directs the Florina Rusi-Marke Comprehensive Breast Center, at Staten Island University Hospital in New York City.

And with an opioid-addiction crisis sweeping the United States, "it is important for physicians to find other means of pain control for our patients", she added.
