"Both Sides of the Sky", a new compilation of unreleased and rare material by the late electric guitar innovator Jimi Hendrix, will be issued on March 9 by Experience Hendrix via Sony's Legacy Recordings.

Both Sides of the Sky sees Hendrix in collaboration with a handful of guests, including Stephen Stills, Johnny Winter, Billy Cox and Buddy Miles from the Band of Gypsys lineup, and Lonnie Youngblood, a notable saxophonist known for working frequently with Hendrix and was his bandmate in Curtis Knight & the Squires. It is produced by his sister, Janie Hendrix, and longtime Hendrix catalog producers John McDermott and Eddie Kramer, who engineered Hendrix's original recordings. "Stills appears on two tracks recorded in September 1969: "a cover version of Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock" (tracked months before Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's famous reworking) and the original song "$20 Fine".

The forthcoming album succeeds a pair of top-selling archival collections from Experience Hendrix: 2010's "Valleys of Neptune", which peaked at No. 4 on the US album chart, and 2013's "People, Hell and Angels", which rose to No. 2. He's worked on all four of Hendrix's albums before the legend's death in 1970.

"The first thing is you put the tape on and you listen to it and the hairs just stand up right on the back of your neck and you go, 'Oh my God".

"Jimi's true home was the studio - that's where the music and the magic happened", Kramer said in a statement about the project. He continues: "It's an incredible thing. 40, 50 years later here we are and I'm listening to these tapes going, 'Oh my God, that's an awesome performance'".

Even though Jimi Hendrix split the scene nearly 50 years ago now, that hasn't stopped him from cranking out full albums of new material on a semi-regular basis.

"It was fantastic just to watch him in the studio or live", adds Kramer.

Another "new" Jimi Hendrix album is on its way, this one pulling together more previously unreleased studio recordings by the celebrated guitarist, singer and songwriter.
