Fifa suspends Brazil federation president Del Nero

Brazil's football federation president has been suspended for 90 days while he is under a Fifa ethics investigation.

Even trial judge Pamela Chen made passing comment on how del Nero could still be running Brazilian football (he is one of those indicted by USA authorities), suggesting he must have "friends in high places".

"Polo Del Nero is banned from all football activities at both national and worldwide level", FIFA said in a statement. He was later indicted himself and has remained in Brazil ever since, maintaining his innocence despite the charges against him for racketeering, wire fraud and money laundering.

Jose Maria Marin, Del Nero's predecessor at the CBF, has been on trial in NY since November alongside former CONMEBOL president Juan Angel Napout and former head of the Peruvian football association Manuel Burga.

It also said that his suspension could be extended by up to 45 days as the ethics committee completes its investigation.

"As many Brazilians that love soccer, my hope is that he is banned for good", soccer great Romario - now a Brazilian federal senator - wrote on his Facebook page.

"Del Nero has already had his crimes exposed along those of other crooks like Jose Maria Marin, who is in jail in the United States, and (former CBF president) Ricardo Teixeira who is still on the loose in Brazil".

Del Nero, a former member of FIFA's executive committee, was among 42 soccer officials and sports marketing executives indicted in the United States in 2015 in a corruption scandal that sparked the biggest crisis in FIFA's history.

He appeared at the Rio Olympics last summer when he welcomed Fifa president Gianni Infantino to the Brazilian football federation offices. Brazil has an extradition treaty with the USA, but seldom sends its own citizens overseas for trial.

The 76-year-old Del Nero was accused of accepting a 6.5 million euro ($7.6 million) commission.
