They then took Kepler data from 670 stars already known to have two or more exoplanets to see if any others had been missed.

The discovery of Kepler-90i has significant implications for both the use of machine learning in astronomy and the field of astronomy itself.

Its parent star is very distant, lying 2,545 light-years away.

All of the planets except for 90i were previously known. A computer was taught to scan 35,000 planetary signals collected by the Kepler Space Telescope for search of planetary transits, which is the dimming of light when planets pass in front of a star.

Despite the noteworthy use of artificial intelligence to speed up the planet discovery process, humans are still needed, the researchers explained.

"It certainly will not replace them at all", he said.


When scientists hunt for an exoplanet, they look for dips in the brightness of far-away points in space that otherwise look like stars.

After problems with its reaction wheels left the spacecraft hobbled in 2013, scientists and engineers focused it on new targets, renaming it the K2 mission.

Since 2009, Kepler has discovered thousands of exoplanets ranging between Earth-size and Neptune-size (four times the size of Earth).

Their findings will be published in The Astronomical Journal. So far it's found 2,525 planets in total. And it discovers new planets in existing systems, observing signals that seem to be of interest, but are too weak to be noticed by humans.

To work properly, a neural network needs lots of practice.

The researchers used TensaFlow, an open source software library produced by Google, and it only took two hours to train the computer model using a regular desktop PC. Shallue and Vanderburg found that the artificial neural network identified such signals correctly 96 percent of the time. Kepler-90h, the outermost planet in the system, orbits its star at a similar distance as Earth does to the Sun.

"Even though the signals were weak, the model was convinced", said Shallue of the software's confidence in its accuracy. "I'm sure there are more firsts in the data waiting for people to find them". It is the first solar system NASA has discovered that has eight planets orbiting a single star other than our own.

"This finding shows that our data will be a treasure trove available to innovative researchers for years to come", said Hertz.

Nasa and Google have revealed the astonishing results of a joint effort to find alien planets orbiting distant stars.

The star known as Kepler-90, is just a bit hotter and larger than the Sun; astronomers already knew of seven planets around it.
