Dutch football club Ajax fires coach Keizer

"Ajax has suspended Marcel Keizer, assistant coach Hennie Spijkerman and Dennis Bergkamp and management will meet them to discuss ending their contracts", the club said in a statement.

"We had a bad summer and a messy start of the season".

Michael Reiziger, a former Ajax player and now its youth team coach, will take charge of the senior side on a temporary basis.

The 48-year-old has taken Ajax to second in the Eredivisie table, but an early exit from the domestic cup, as well as failure to qualify for both the Champions League and Europa League, has cost him his job.

One of the specific reasons stated for Bergkamp's departure was a "difference of opinion" over the implementation of technical policy.

"We had a frightful summer and poor start to the season", added general director Edwin van der Sar on the club's website (ajax.nl).

Keizer was promoted from his role in charge of the youth team in the summer after Peter Bosz left for Borussia Dortmund.

In European competition this season, Ajax lost in the Champions League preliminary round to Nice before dropping into the Europa League playoff round where they were beaten by Rosenborg of Norway.

"Club management does not have enough confidence that the goal of Ajax will be realized with them".

'In particular Marc Overmars (technical director) and I have frequently spoken the months afterwards about the permanent volatility of the first team.

They lie second in the league, five points off leaders PSV, and the timing of the coaching change seems odd given Ajax have taken 16 points out of the last 18 available - the best form in the division.

At home, things are also not going Ajax's way and they crashed out of the Dutch Cup on Wednesday after losing on penalties to FC Twente following a 1-1 draw.
