The company that owns the New York City apartment building where a dozen people died in a fire says it is "shocked and saddened" by the tragedy.

D&E Equities said through spokesman Ronn Torossian that it is communicating with the city about the Thursday fire in the Bronx.

Flames and smoke funneled from the ground floor to the top of the five-story building via the stairwell, blocking residents of the building's 25 apartments from the easiest way out. "The building is gone", he said.

It was the city's deadliest fire in decades, excluding the September 11 terror attacks.

Resident Diana Hayes told the New York Times she had escaped with her daughter and pulled a neighbour's two children from the fire, but that she had to leave other children behind. Stewart moved to the United States from Jamaica in the 1980s.

"The stairway acted like a chimney", Mr Nigro said.

One family is as yet searching for a missing child, as per ABC station WABC in New York City.

Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said the young boy had a history of playing with the burners and turning them. Soon, as many as 170 firemen arrived on the scene to slow the raging fire. Four people are still fighting for their lives.

Nigro stresses the importance of closing doors to help contain fires. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio described the fire as the worst in the city a quarter of a century.

"It is the time of year where people celebrate and certainly here we have people who have lost their lives, lost their homes, lost everything and we grieve with them as everyone in this city should and does".

A baby girl seen in a photo next to a smiling Batiz is also among the dead, Fernando said. His age was not given.

Witnesses described horrific scenes as residents scrambled to escape.

Flames tore through the apartment and out into the communal stairwell.

The 12 confirmed fatalities made the fire the deadliest since an inferno at the Happy Land social club - less than a mile from Thursday's blaze - which killed 87 people in 1990, the Times said.

Meanwhile, four people remain in critical condition, fighting for their lives, after the fire, according to Mayor de Blasio.

Photographs and video of the building seemed to show that the fire, which was reported just before 7 p.m., appeared to be under control.

The cause of the blaze - the city's deadliest in decades - was under investigation, authorities said.

The blaze broke out Thursday night on the first floor of a five-story building.

"We get 75 to 100 referrals per year of children who are fascinated with fire, playing with fire", he said. Three young girls were whisked into a neighboring building after climbing down a fire escape with no shoes or coats.
