Derry councillor Gary Donnelly has been arrested in connection with the 2006 murder of British agent Denis Donaldson.

Two men, aged in their 40s and 30s, were arrested last night and are being held at Letterkenny Garda Station.

Both are being questioned at Letterkenny Garda Station.

Mr Donnelly, who was previously a spokesman for the dissident republican 32 County Sovereignty Movement, was arrested as he left a commemoration near Dungloe, Co Donegal yesterday where he had been the speaker.

Donaldson, a former member of Sinn Féin and of the Provisional IRA, was murdered in April 2006 in Doochary, where he had been living since it emerged that he had been working as an agent for the British intelligence agency MI5.

"It was a staged arrest, politically motivated and it was to undermine the work of independent councillors like ourselves".

"The family believe he is the person with the most serious questions to answer in this matter and we would urge, yet again, that the authorities speak to him under caution and as a suspect in this case".
