Scans confirmed that Steyn would miss the rest of the three-match series, and would be reassessed again in 4-6 weeks' time to determine the extent of the injury. He has been ruled out of the series.

Although the South African team registered a comprehensive victory in the opener in Cape Town, they received a major blow as marquee pacer Dale Steyn will have to sit out with yet another injury.

Olivier, 25, has played five tests since making his debut against Sri Lanka 12 months ago and has 17 wickets at an average of 23.11.

Speaking of Oliver, Gibson added, "I've heard a lot of good things about him".

Commenting on the additions, Proteas coach Ottis Gibson said: "We have to replace Dale who has picked up an unfortunate injury". I've seen him on TV but when I was at the Titans he wasn't playing.

Olivier has played five Tests - all of them in 2017 - and Ngidi made his global debut in a T20I against Sri Lanka past year but is yet to play the other two formats at the worldwide stage. "When we get to Pretoria for our preparation days he will be with us, and then we'll have a look at conditions and make a decision which XI will take the field". Ngidi on the other hand, is yet to play a Test match for South Africa.

South Africa squad: Faf du Plessis (c), Deal Elgar, Aiden Markram, Hashim Amla, Temba Bavuma, Theunis de Bruyne, Quinton de Kock (wk), Keshav Maharaj, Morne Morkel, Chris Morris, Vernon Philander, Kagiso Rabada, Andile Phehlukwayo, Duanne Olivier, Lungi Ngidi.
