Winfrey began with talk of watching Sidney Poitier win the Oscar for Best Actor, when she was a child in 1964, and his Cecil B. DeMille Award win later, in the early '80s, driving home how awesome it was for her to take her place on the stage and accept the same award for "outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment".

Winfrey envisioned a future without sexual harassment and assault while accepting a lifetime achievement award at the Golden Globes.

She said that the Time's Up initiative wasn't just launched to help privileged women in Hollywood gain access to better pay, opportunities and freedom from sexual harassment but to help women in all industries gain protections against abuse and oppression.

After that remark, Alex Marlow, editor-in-chief of right-wing website Brietbart, said in a radio broadcast that "especially when there's been so many allegations against President Trump, I don't know why the daughter of President Trump, who has been accused by [lawyer] Gloria Allred and some dozen, maybe two dozen, women over the years doing something inappropriate, and nothing's ever come of that". The chat show host talked powerfully about the moments that had inspired her as a little girl before tackling racism, sexism, the Hollywood sexual harassment scandal and the wider implications for ordinary women.

Representatives for Franco and Rockwell said their clients could not be reached, but noted that during interviews with reporters backstage after their wins, the men readily responded to queries about the Time's Up movement.

Meanwhile, numerous women who won Golden Globes used their time on stage to speak about gender equality, giving the awards show the bulk of its most inspiring moments. Of course that's a big issue in the entertainment industry right now, but Winfrey was sure to bring up the women who don't have such massive platforms and find it even harder to have their stories told, much less believed. USA women should shine, be colorful and sparkle. "We also know it's the insatiable dedication to uncovering the absolute truth that keeps us from turning a blind eye to corruption and to injustice", she declared. So, I am moved beyond measure to be standing next to this woman.

On the red carpet, when men were asked about their black tuxes and Time's Up pins, some had answers ready. "It's going to be a good year", the late-night NBC funnyman said.

Franco - who also directed the film about Tommy Wiseau's flop-turned-cult-hit "The Room" - gave a shoutout to his brother and co-star Dave, telling the gathered celebrities: "I love him more than anything".
