Costa scores on Atletico return

Diego Costa scored a goal and had an injury scare in his first five minutes back with Atletico Madrid Wednesday.

"I was given the opportunity to play again and I had the chance to score a goal, that makes me even happier".

The striker agreed a deal to re-join the Spanish giants from Chelsea in September but Atletico's transfer ban meant he was prevented from making his second debut until January.

Simeone is contracted to Atleti until the summer of 2020, but his son Giovanni expects his dad to end his spell at Wanda Metropolitano soon and head across Europe to take charge of I Nerazzurri.

Costa's goals, physical play and "bad boy" attitude that rattles rivals are the ideal fit for Simeone's emphasis on hard work and a united team. But neither Mario Mandzukic nor Jackson Martinez panned out, and current striker Kevin Gameiro has only given Atletico goals in bursts.

France forward Antoine Griezmann completed the scoring in stoppage time following the late dismissal of Lleida defender Marc Trilles. That's very important for us. "I hope we can enjoy them for a long time", Simeone said Saturday. The 24-year-old has struggled to settle at Los Rojiblancos since joining the club from Villarreal two years ago on a €20 million move.

Their second came four minutes later when a sweeping counter-attack saw Kevin Gameiro set up strike partner Fernando Torres to knock home at the back post [albeit while offside].

Costa also has a lot to play for individually. I just want to get in shape to play as soon as possible, I'm exhausted of training. I wanted to work with this coach.
