Here Is Fox's New Channel Name After The Disney Acquisition

But without an accompanying TV studio making programs, there's a strong belief among TV executives that the broadcast network - responsible for hits like "The Simpsons", "24" and "Empire" - would be a significantly less ambitious home for TV. While Fox's scripted entertainment TV properties are all packed for lodging at the Mouse House, the Murdoch family will not be relinquishing their news and sports divisions. In Dec. 2017, Disney said it was buying a large part of the Murdoch family's 21st Century Fox for about $52.4 billion in stock, including its film and TV studios and cable and worldwide TV businesses. But it's still early days to speculate on whether any of it will, in the long run, remain with Fox - even as the new Fox broadcasting network figures out how it will deliver on its promise for more scripted content.

When Disney agreed to buy Fox, they bought 21st Century Fox's film and TV studio, as well as the FX and National Geographic cable channels, but not the Fox Broadcasting network and stations. New Fox has an extraordinary opportunity to chart a new course for the future.

Translation: The network will make a firm decision about renewals closer to May when it has a better idea of how many new shows it is going to pick up for the fall and it begins planning its 2018-19 TV schedule.

Fox Television Group CEOs Dana Walden and Gary Newman says the announced sale that will split up Fox and the 20th Century Fox studio won't turn Fox into a platform exclusively for sports and other live programming. For the next year, he and Walden will continue running the network, which means developing a slate of new pilots for the fall.

But he said Disney executives are "enormous fans of our brand" and he predicted that the future bodes well for Fox's creative partners.

Addressing the sale as "the elephant in the room or, in our case, the mouse", Newman said he expects it will pass regulatory muster in fairly quick fashion and that it will be business as usual for the next 12 to 18 months as the process plays out.
