Portman is in talks with Fox Searchlight to nab the lead role in Pale Blue Dot, reports Variety.

If this news is authentic, the actress may portray the character of an astronaut. Fox Searchlight, which are the distributors of the movie are now in search for a male lead for the upcoming movie.

Witherspoon departed the role last November due to scheduling conflicts with Season 2 of "Big Little Lies," though she will continue to produce with Bruna Papandrea.

The film will also mark the big screen directorial debut of television auteur of Noah Hawley, the man behind FX's critically acclaimed Fargo and Legion.

Witherspoon had been set to star in the film, about an astronaut who loses her grip on reality after returning home from a long space voyage.

The drama was once meant to be a starring vehicle for Reese Witherspoon, but she is instead producing along with Bruna Papandrea. Oprah spoke with some of Hollywood's most powerful women after the Golden Globes about how best to champion women. Portman has starred in V for Vendetta, Goya's Ghosts, The Other Boleyn Girl, Thor and Thor: The Dark World.

For Portman, who is coming off recent film efforts such as the Oscar-nominated 2016 Jackie Kennedy biopic, Jackie, 2016 fantasy film, Planetarium and 2017 musically-inclined romance drama, Song To Song, Pale Blue Dot could see her channeling a similar descent into madness akin to her performance in 2010's Black Swan.
