Cohen also said via Twitter that he is suing the private investigative firm Fusion GPS, which compiled a dossier of claims that say, among other things, that Cohen and Trump had ties with shadowy Russian characters.

This private interrogation of the head of the Fusion GPS research firm was released in a transcript Tuesday, dumped onto the internet by a high-ranking Democrat who expressed frustration over how that material is being treated by her partisan adversaries. Simpson acknowledged that he didn't like Trump as a candidate but said his job was to find facts, not to push an agenda. Readers following the story will want to review the transcript themselves.

"They believed Chris's information might be credible because they had other intelligence that indicated the same thing and one of those pieces of intelligence was a human source from inside the Trump organization", he said during his testimony in August. Dianne Feinstein for releasing the transcript of an interview of a key witness in the Senate Judiciary Committee's investigation of Russian collusion with the Trump campaign - and in the process coined a new nickname for the California Democrat, the committee's ranking minority member.

It wasn't clear from the transcript, because of the differing ways Simpson described the source, whether the person was part of Trump's business or his campaign.

Levy responded, "He's given you over nine hours of information and he's going to decline to answer this one question".

He added: "Somebody's already been killed as a result of the publication of this dossier and no harm should come to anybody related to this honest work".

The testimony supports a recent report from the New York Times that said the FBI investigation into meddling was launched not because of the dossier but because of information that Trump adviser George Papadopoulos disclosed to an Australian ambassador.

As part of that research, Fusion GPS hired Steele, who had been the head of MI6's Russian Federation desk.

The special counsel's team of investigators has expressed interest in speaking with Mr Trump, but no details have been worked out.

If not for Steele's file, the GOP reasoning goes, the FBI would never have started down the path of investigating Trump, which would never have led to FBI Director James Comey approaching Trump about the file; absent this, Comey would never have been fired, there would be no Mueller probe, and all would be right with the world.

"I'm increasingly anxious Republicans will shut down the House intelligence committee investigation at the end of the month", congressman Adam Schiff, who is the leading Democrat on the House intelligence committee, said last month. They have also called for the release of the transcripts.

In a statement released alongside more than 300 pages of Simpson's tesimony (pdf), Feinstein said, "The American people deserve the opportunity to see what he said and judge for themselves". As concerns mounted about Russia's attempts to interfere with the election, Steele brought some of his research to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Several Republican-led committees are now probing whether the document formed the basis for the FBI's initial investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential race.
