Bears keeping defensive coordinator Vic Fangio

He spent the 2017 season as a college football analyst for Fox Sports.

He's among the many big hires for new head coach Matt Nagy, who is looking to get the Bears out of the NFC North basement.

Helfrich, 44, was the OR head coach from 2013 to "16, after four years of being the Ducks" quarterbacks coach-offensive coordinator under Chip Kelly.

The Bears were the first team to strike with their head coach and were able to put together a nice staff because of it. But he's the second arrival from the college ranks, joining former Notre Dame offensive line coach Harry Hiestand, whose securing by Nagy on Thursday was met with rave reviews.

After four seasons and a 37-16 record, he was sacked in November 2016 and still owed $11.6 million as part of a contract extension that ran through January 2020.

Helfrich's arrival signals that Nagy will continue to meld Reid's West Coast scheme with spread principles, including run-pass options and utilizing every inch of the field, not every second on the play clock. Still, the Bears and Nagy were eager to retain Fangio; their highly respected and veteran defensive coordinator who inherited one of the NFL's worst defenses in 2015 and coached the unit back to respectability over the last three seasons. The Bears were 5-11 this past season and haven't finished above.500 since they let Lovie Smith go following a 10-6 finish in 2012, two years after their last visit to the playoffs. But the Bears will need to acquire some play-making receivers, which they sorely lacked this past season.

Tabor spent the past seven seasons as Cleveland's special teams coordinator. Now that the Fangio wait is over, you can expect the rest of the team's assistant coaches to be named pretty quickly. Fangio has coached a total of 31 years in the National Football League, with additional stops in Baltimore, Houston, Indianapolis, Carolina and New Orleans.
