CES 2018, An Event All About Consumer Electronics, Hit By Major Blackout

The lights went off abruptly at almost 11:15 am PT on Wednesday, CNET's John Falcone reported. "We are grateful to NV Energy for their swift assistance, to our customers and their clients for their patience and to the staff for ensuring the safety and security of all attendees and exhibitors". The mood was largely calm and relaxed early on, Falcone wrote, although anyone who had put a phone in an electronic charging locker was unable to access it for the duration.

According to reports, the power outage happened at around 11:30 PST in the Center Hall, where CES 2018 was being held.

"A preliminary assessment indicates that condensation from heavy rainfall caused a flashover on one of the facility's transformers", the CTA's statement reads. The convention, taking place right now in Las Vegas, is the largest gathering of electronics in the world and it includes a little bit of everything; medical equipment, incredibly cool TVs, a million different wireless charging pads, and more.

When the lights went out, Twitter lit up with photos and updates from attendees. The Consumer Technology Association, which runs the event, said they are "working hard to resolve" the issue.

Some exhibitors kept going, however. Major brands that participated in this year's CES include Intel, Ford, LG, Samsung, and Sony. Flashlights came in handy at the Intel booth. Other areas took longer.

LAS VEGAS-On the first day of CES, Tuesday, a record 1.33 inches of rain fell, the wettest one-day downpour since the Weather Service began keeping records in 1937. Long lines formed at the convention center for cabs. Power was fully restored at 2:10 p.m., as was shared by the organizers of CES 2018.
