Dayton mayor ends bid for OH governor, endorses Cordray

In an appearance with Cordray at the Dayton Public Library, Whaley said she would continue to train her fire on a Republican-controlled Statehouse that she believes has abandoned average Ohioans by slashing funds to local communities and through other shortcomings. Whaley is running for re-election as Dayton mayor this year.

Cordray praised Whaley, calling her endorsement "a high-minded and generous act".

She called for unity, saying: "Now is the time to get behind candidates that will lead us to victory in November".

With Whaley's departure and Sutton's withdrawal, the remaining Democratic candidates for governor are Cordray, Schiavoni, ex-state Rep. Connie Pillich and Ohio Supreme Court Justice Bill O'Neill. Joe Schiavoni, of Boardman - now have running mates in place and both said they plan to stay in what would be a five-way primary.

The victor will face either Republican Attorney General Mike DeWine or Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor in the November election. Former U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich, a former Cleveland mayor and two-time presidential contender, is expected to launch a campaign next week.

The governor's seat is held by Republican John Kasich, who is term limited. Many see Cordray as Democrats' best chance of retaking control of the key political battleground - but his remaining rivals gave no ground Friday.

"I consider her a friend", Schiavoni said. That's why it's extremely disappointing to see her endorse the "anointed" ticket. To them I say simply: "'Watch us'".

"I'm not in this for my career - I'm in it to make life better for OH families", Schiavoni, of Boardman, D-33rd, said Friday. The reality is that Rich Cordray can't win back voters we lost in 2016.

"I'm not in this for my career". "That means I can't be bought or pressured into taking the easy path".

"He has been a real favorite of the left, and it seems to me that he and Cordray could be competing for the same progressive wing of the party for votes", Ms. Miller said. The last wild card is who Kucinich and Pillich pick as their running mates.
