First 'Blue Moon' total eclipse in 150 years to occur soon

A total lunar eclipse happens when the moon enters the darkest part of the earth's shadow, called the umbra. Both of these eclipses will be total.

Here is everything you need to know.

When is the next supermoon this year?

Noah Petro - NASA When is the next supermoon? On Jan. 31, all three of these celestial events will happen at the same time. Moonset will intervene for the rest of North and Central America. Folks in the Eastern United States, where the eclipse will be partial, will have to get up in the morning to see it.

Unless you are a regular moon-watcher, you may not notice anything different about this full moon.

It's not often that you get to say a "super blue blood moon" is coming.

The Pacific Ocean will be turned towards the Moon at the time and the eclipse will take place during the middle of the night. The moon will appear bigger and brighter in the sky. These rare events also provide the scientists a chance to study the celestial elements closely.

The commonly used definition of a supermoon is any full moon that falls within the 90% of the lunar orbit closest to Earth. The moon is responsible for providing a rhythm to the tidal waves on the surface of the Earth even when it is located at a distance of 385,000km from our planet.

During its orbit, it varies slightly closer (perigee) and farther (apogee) from Earth each month.

While the blue moon and the lunar eclipse will occur on January 31, the supermoon will actually take place on January 30.

What is a blue moon?

The phrase "once in a blue moon" - meaning something that does not happen very often - impresses how infrequent this event is.

Blue Moons aren't unique as they happen around once every 2.7 years because the number of days in a new moon to new moon is a bit less than the usual calendar month.

As suggested by reports, no such events shall be seen on February 2018, but the month of March shall bring two full moon events which will again include the blue moon.

Because we already experienced a full moon on January 1, the second will be a blue moon.

The blue moon on 31 January will also be a supermoon, a phenomenon that occurs when a full moon or new moon coincides with the point in the moon's orbit closest to Earth.

What is a total lunar eclipse?

"The moon will turn red or coppery during the total eclipse".

A blood moon happens during a total or a partial lunar eclipse.

"The moon will lose its brightness and take on an eerie, fainter-than-normal glow from the scant sunlight that makes its way through Earth's atmosphere", according to NASA.
