Almost two months after Matt Lauer was ousted from NBC over allegations of sexual misconduct, his former co-host Katie Couric finally has something to say.

"The whole thing has been very painful for me", Couric told People in an interview published Saturday (Jan. 13). "The accounts I have read and heard are upsetting, debilitating and disorienting plus it's really completely improper that any female in the Now show experienced this sort of treatment method".

Katie Couric has broken her silence over her former Today co-host Matt Lauer's firing amid sexual harassment and assault claims.

"I had no idea this was going on during my tenure or after I left", Couric said.

Matt Lauer says his farewell to Katie Couric, his exiting co-host of the NBC "Today" television program in the studio, Wednesday May 31, 2006. Couric said that she and Lauer had a "brother-sister" relationship and that he treated her with respect.

Still, the entire situation is "very upsetting" to Couric, and although she's still unsure how to fully process Lauer's actions, she's optimistic about the future of Today. "I really admire the way Savannah and Hoda and the entire "Today" show staff have handled a very hard situation".

He apologized afterwards in a groveling statement in which he said "some" of the allegations were "untrue". "To the people I have hurt, I am truly sorry", he wrote. Because I am writing this, I still know the thickness of the disappointment and damage I have gone behind at home and in NBC.

Hollywood's famous women, in turn, have come together to form the Time's Up initiative to help women achieve equality in the workplace, and wore black at the Golden Globes as a statement of solidarity with their cause.

Insisting that Lauer had always been "respectful" towards her, she said a 2012 comment she made that he "pinched her a** a lot" was "just a joke". "Clearly we are witnessing a sea change and a long overdue course correction".
